HHI, A Global Leader

Korean multinational Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has a global business network in each of its six business divisions: Shipbuilding, Offshore & Engineering, Industrial Plant & Engineering, Engine & Machinery, Electro Electric Systems, and Construction Equipment.

Founded by the late Chung Ju-yung on March 23, 1972, Hyundai Heavy Industries wrote the first chapter of its shipbuilding history in June, 1974, by completing construction of the world's largest shipyard and two VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carrier) simultaneously. A decade after its first delivery, the Hyundai Shipyard topped 10 million deadweight tons in aggregate ship production, and has maintained the leading position in the world shipbuilding market ever since.

Hyundai Shipyard's drive has mirrored the growth of modern Korean heavy industry, and its success has allowed it to expand into other heavy industry areas, ultimately leading to the formation of Hyundai Heavy Industries, an integrated heavy industry company. The latest chapter of HHI's history began when it separated from the Hyundai Group in February, 2002.

CE Division
Construction Equipment Division

The construction equipment division markets construction and material handling equipment on a worldwide level. “We Build a Better Future” is the division’s motto, and its belief.

The division was initially created in 1985, as part of the Heavy Machine division, but soon gained independence as an autonomous division in 1987. By 1988, the first in-house designed excavators (21t and 29t) were launched in the domestic Korean market. One year later, Hyundai took over Korean Forklift manufacturer, Halla Heavy Industries. The first Hyundai branded forklift truck was brought to market in 2000.

Meanwhile, the division has established branch offices on every continenent, counting on approximately 460 dealers in 100 countries worldwide. About 36,000 units are built on a yearly basis in the company’s production facilities in Ulsan (S-Korea), Bejing, and Changzou (China).

Hyundai plays a dominant role in China’s excavator market, with a market share of slightly over 17%. In a significant number of European countries, Hyundai is one of the leading construction equipment brands, with market leadership in Bulgaria. The Hyundai name is rising in both the construction equipment and material handling sector.
